Gov't will not take action against statements issued by councils

Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar has assured that the government will refrain from intervening with statements issued by councils. He made the affirmation came during a press briefing aimed at elucidating the ministry's undertakings. His remarks followed a notice from the Local Government Authority (LGA) to a council concerning its statement regarding President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's visit to Kendhikolhudhoo, Noonu Atoll.

Speaking at the press conference, Minister Shareef emphasised that the actions of the LGA must align with the parameters of the law. He underscored that any transgressions by the LGA would fall under the purview of the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) for scrutiny. He aalso reiterated that the interventions of the LGA in council affairs must adhere to legal statutes and regulations.

Additionally, Minister Shareef affirmed the government's commitment to refrain from impinging on agencies' lawful mandates. He reiterated that no punitive measures would be taken against councils based on their statements, a stance also endorsed by President Dr. Muizzu.

The AGO provided counsel to the LGA regarding their notice, suggesting an inquiry. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mariyam Zulfa noted the recommendation of the AGO for an investigation. She, however, assured that the LGA would offer continued support and guidance to councils, ensuring uninterrupted operations.

Additionally, Zulfa highlighted the necessity for immediate action by the LGA to prevent prolonged inquiries and disruptions in communication. She also disclosed the directive of the LGA for the council to retract their statement.
