The Male' City Council has announced the imposition of fines on 100 individuals for littering on the streets of Male' City. The fines, amounting to USD 32.4 each, were issued since February. The increase in complaints about waste left on the streets, particularly bulky items such as furniture and household goods after household cleaning, has been noted ahead of Ramadan.
In response to the issue, cleanup efforts involving 17 pickup trucks were undertaken on March 12, removing 350kg of waste from the streets. Despite these efforts, improper waste disposal on the streets persists.
Mayor Adam Azim highlighted the collaboration between the city council and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) to identify and fine those responsible for littering. He affirmed the council's commitment to taking decisive action against individuals caught disposing waste on the streets. Ongoing efforts with Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) were also mentioned to improve waste disposal practices.
Littering in various areas, including streets, parks, public spaces, harbours, and commercial zones in Male' and Villimale', is strictly prohibited, with violators reported to the police and fined accordingly. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has expressed concern over street waste disposal, citing its negative environmental and health impacts. The EPA advised against this practice to safeguard both the environment and public health.
