The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has appointed Ali Nashath from Feridhoo, Alif Alif Atoll, as the new vice president of the commission. This decision follows the retirement of the former member and Vice President of the ECM, Ismail Habeeb. The commission made this decision during a general assembly, ensuring adherence to laws and regulations.
Ali Nashath initially joined the ECM as a member on July 25, 2018, and completed his first term on July 25, 2023. He was subsequently selected to serve his second term as a member on November 16, 2023. The ECM comprises five members, each serving a five-year term before their tenure expires. Consequently, the new vice president's term will conclude on July 25, 2028.
Former Vice President Ismail Habib welcomed Nashath as the new vice president in a post, expressing confidence in Nashath's capabilities to organize elections to modern standards. The post also highlighted Nashath's skills in digitalizing ECM services, making them more accessible for political parties, candidates, and all users of the commission's services.
The five members of the commission, including Nashath, are President Fuwad Thaufeeq, Dr. Mohammed Zahir, Mohamed Asif, and the newly appointed member Hassan Zakariyya following the retirement of former member Ismail Habeeb.
