President plans to end unjust trial detentions

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to put an end to the unjust detention pending trial. He made the announcement during the "Raees ge Javaab" series, which facilitates direct public interaction with the President on diverse issues.

Nasheeda Hassan from Mulah, Meemu Atoll, raised concerns with President Dr. Muizzu about whether the President had committed to releasing individuals held in custody pending trial, and if so, when it would occur.

In response, President Dr. Muizzu emphasised the significance of addressing the matter and affirmed that necessary legislative adjustments are underway to tackle it. He mentioned the reinforcement of the investigative process as part of the effort and assured the public that a permanent solution will be achieved.

President Dr. Muizzu had previously announced the cessation of prolonged detention pending trial in his parliamentary address in February. Furthermore, the enhancement of prison facilities stands as a presidential commitment, which he guaranteed would be fulfilled within his term.
