Rate of juvenile offenders increasing rapidly

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has raised concerns over the increasing number of juvenile offenders, citing a rise in family problems as a contributing factor. The Crime Investigation Department of MPS highlighted the trend during a media briefing, noting a surge in the involvement of children in various crimes.

The Head of Family and Child Protection at MPS Abdulla Naseer disclosed that by the end of 2023, 619 family cases, 307 cases related to crimes against children, and 134 juvenile offenses were submitted for investigation. Additionally, as of February 15, 2024, an additional 59 family cases, 41 cases related to crimes against children, and 12 juvenile offenses had been submitted for investigation.

MPS further reported that 130 juvenile offenders are currently in detention for various cases, with an observed increase in the number of female offenders. Chief Inspector of Police Ahmed Sof'ath Rauf, the Acting Head of the Crime Against Children Department, highlighted that many cases, particularly those involving blackmail, occur through social media platforms.

To address these concerning trends, MPS stated that discussions are underway with the Prosecutor General to streamline the investigation process for cases involving children. Additionally, MPS emphasized the importance of raising awareness about crimes involving children and urged parents and guardians to be vigilant about their children's activities.
