MPS arrests suspects linked to criminal Telegram channels

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has disclosed that several suspects are under arrest in connection with Telegram channels implicated in widespread criminal activities.

During a press conference to shed light on the ongoing investigations into illicit Telegram channels, Inspector Aminath Mohamed from the Police Cyber Policing Centre revealed that a targeted operation was executed on March 6 based on intelligence indicating unlawful operations through Telegram channels. She confirmed the arrest of a 28-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman during the operation. She further highlighted that financial analyses of the detainees suggested a lack of legitimate income sources.

Additionally, Inspector Aminath stated that a concerted effort has been initiated against the operators of these Telegram channels, who stand accused of offenses including money laundering, drug trafficking, solicitation of prostitution, and the production of counterfeit documents.

MPS stated that the individuals arrested in connection with the case possess prior criminal records, facing charges related to money laundering, drug trafficking, solicitation of prostitution, and promotion. Operating since April 2023, the channel has emerged as the most prominent platform for such activities in the Maldives to date. Its user base witnessed a substantial surge between December and February, attracting around 7,000 followers.
