Reports have indicated that the apparent temperature has risen above the 44-degree Celsius in various regions of Maldives
The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has highlighted that although the temperature in Hulhumale is 33.1 degrees Celsius, the 'feel like' temperature reached 44.7 degrees Celsius. Similarly, in Hanimaadhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, while the temperature is 33.5 degrees Celsius, the apparent temperature is recorded at 43.7 degrees Celsius.
Furthermore, Kadhdhoo, Laamu Atoll recorded temperatures at 31.6 degrees Celsius, but the 'feel like' temperatures soar to 41 degrees Celsius. Likewise, Kaadehdhdhoo, Gaa Dhaalu Atoll reported a temperature of 31.8 degrees Celsius, with the 'feel like' temperature at 41.7 degrees Celsius. Gan, Addu City, has an actual temperature of 32 degrees Celsius, but the 'feel like' temperature is 40.8 degrees Celsius.
Looking ahead to 2024, the Met Office predicts March and April to be the hottest months. The weakening winds, coupled with rising humidity levels, are expected to intensify temperatures, potentially reaching as high as 40 degrees Celsius.
Potential health issues due to heat include fatigue, headaches/vertigo, dehydration, dry skin with heat rashes, and eye allergies.
To prevent heat stress, the following measures are recommended:
- Use an umbrella when going out
- Wear loose clothing and a cap
- Apply sun lotion
- Stay hydrated
- Wear sunglasses
- Limit sugary drinks
The Met Office has urged individuals to take preventive measures against heat, especially when taking children outdoors, emphasizing the importance of keeping them hydrated amidst the rising temperatures.
