The Maldives and Australia have engaged in discussions concerning the challenges posed by climate change for vulnerable nations like the Maldives. The discussions occurred during a courtesy call paid to Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer by Australia’s Ambassador for Climate Change Kristin Tilley.
During the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Zameer and Ambassador Tilley discussed the pressing challenges faced by climate vulnerable Small Island Developing States (SIDs) like the Maldives and opportunities to collaborate with like-minded countries such as Australia.
Additionally, Minister Zameer briefed on the environmental and climate change policies of President Dr. Muizzu’s government including the shift to 33% renewable energy and the plan to plant five million trees throughout the Maldives. He also underscored the importance of jointly addressing the current challenges faced by SIDs in accessing climate financing through international financial institutions.
Discussions also centred around deepening the existing relations with emphasis on strengthening cooperation in areas such as tourism and people-to-people ties.
