Minister states new details on attack targeting President Nasheed obtained

Minister of Defense Ghassan Maumoon has disclosed that new information has come to light regarding the deadly bomb attack targeting former President Mohamed Nasheed.

During a parliamentary session, Parliamentarian Imthiyaz Fahumy expressed concerns about the assassination attempt on President Nasheed on May 6, 2021, and queried whether the current administration would undertake a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

In response, Minister Ghassan confirmed the acquisition of new information pertaining to the attack but refrained from divulging specific details at this time. He reiterated the commitment of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) to ensuring the security of all individuals in adherence to the law and regulations.

On the night of May 6, 2021, President Mohamed Nasheed was the target of an assassination attempt. Nasheed sustained severe injuries after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attached to a motorcycle detonated while he was entering his car. The attack inflicted serious injuries, necessitating multiple life-saving surgeries at ADK Hospital in Male’ and subsequent medical treatment in Germany and the UK.

Ahmed Aduham Rasheed has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for actively participating in the bombing, while Abdulla Ali Manik from Molhadhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll, has received a five-year sentence for collaborating with and providing assistance to terrorist groups. Mohamed Thasleem from Hoarafushi, Haa Alifu Atoll, Alanaasige, was initially detained but later acquitted by the court. Additionally, other individuals have been charged in connection with the bombing incident.

Following the minister's confirmation of new updates, Member of Parliament Imthiyaz Fahumy has proposed the parliament to seeking further information.
