Previous gov’t failed on housing crisis despite full control

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has criticised the previous government for its inability to address the housing crisis in the Maldives, despite having complete control of the state.

Speaking at a political gathering in Male' City, President Muizzu pledged to prioritise housing solutions during his five-year term, considering it a top priority. He emphasised initiating efforts to tackle housing challenges from the beginning of his tenure, aiming for resolution by its conclusion, unlike past administrations.

President Muizzu also revealed the launch of the Fushidhiggarufalhu reclamation project to alleviate housing issues in the Greater Male' Region. He mentioned imminent land allocations from reclaimed areas in Hulhumale', Giraavarufalhu, and Gulhifalhu, with land use plans already drafted for Giraavarufalhu and Gulhifalhu.

Furthermore, President Muizzu underscored the failure of previous administrations, despite full governmental control, to effectively address the housing crisis due to inadequate planning and delayed action. In contrast, he prioritised land reclamation at Fushidhiggaru falhu early on, recognizing the insufficient housing in Hulhumale', Giraavarufalhu, and Gulhifalhu.

Moreover, President Muizzu announced forthcoming legislation and budget allocations targeting housing challenges, urging support for government-aligned representatives in Parliament. He also revealed that budgeted housing projects for the current year are set to commence practical implementation by the end of July.
