HRCM to act on election violations

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has called upon state authorities to address instances of reported violations against the rights of candidates and voters ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections, in response to a series of concerning incidents.

In a press release, HRCM confirmed reports of election influencing practices, such as offering job opportunities to influence votes and threats of losing jobs for supporting particular candidates, following the excitement of parliamentary elections. Concurrently, it expressed significant concern regarding the reported incidents.

Additionally, HRCM shed light on recent activities involving the spreading of false information pertaining to parliamentary candidates and as well as political parties, whether intentionally or unintentionally adversely impacting their reputation. Furthermore, instances of bribery, vote buying and selling, issuing job threats, and damaging campaign materials have been identified as key concerns. As a result, HRCM has urged the public to refrain from engaging in any such endeavour.

Notably, HRCM underscored the importance of candidates respecting each other, highlighting the significance of upholding decorum throughout the parliamentary campaign. It further urged parties, institutions and individuals to conduct the election in a competitive sprit with the legal framework in place.
