RTL commences between Male’ and Meemu Atoll

Agreements pertaining to commence high-speed ferry services through Raajje Transport Link (RTL) between Male' City and Meemu Atoll have been signed. The agreement was signed by the Director General of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation Ahmed Shameem and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Abdulla Ziyadh. Meanwhile, the agreement relating the expansion of RTL services to Noonu Atoll and Baa Atoll were signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry Mariyam Shahaan and CEO of MTCC Ziyaadh.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen disclosed that the high-speed ferries will be scheduled to travel twice a week between Male' and Meemu Atoll. The minister observed that despite the ongoing services within the atoll, the initiative was introduced to resolve the challenges faced to travel between both islands.

Additionally, Minister Ameen stated that amendments are required to be brought to the regulations and policies in order to ensure that work of six zones entrusted to MTCC are conducted effectively. The minister acknowledged some obstacles the company faces, while observing that some routes utilised were not completely approved by the public. Therefore, he affirmed that modifications will be brought to the routes, ensuring positive changes as requested.

During the event, CEO Ziyad confirmed that the services will be provided at affordable prices. As such, burdens to travel for employment purposes or medical purposes will be reduced, while enhancing social cohesion within the nation. The CEO further stated that the introduction of their services will significantly contribute to the tourism sector and open more commercial opportunities.

RTL operates under MTCC with a total of 105 buses, 25 ferries and 580 employees, to provide services to Male' City and other atolls. MTCC expressed confidence to put the maximum effort required to expand their services to the whole nation, which is a target of the government as well.
