The Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has initiated discussions with foreign companies regarding the development of Hithadhoo Port in Addu City. The relevant discussions were by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MPL Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim and senior executives of Hithadhoo Port.
Speaking to PSM news, CEO Wajeeh reiterated that there will be significant advancements following the upgrades to the Hithadhoo Port. He further noted that the port, which was established 18 years ago, is currently accessible only to the smallest vessels. He affirmed that no previous administration had engaged in the development of the port, citing that it has resulted in a vulnerable condition.
Moreover, Wajeeh revealed the port will be developed to accommodate the largest vessels, emphasising that expansions will be made to the quay wall and terminal as well. Additionally, he stated that efforts are being directed towards the development of a fish hub in the port, highlighting that discussions are currently in progress with foreign entities to ascertain whether if it is viable in the Maldives.
MPL stressed that a plan has been implemented to facilitate bunkering services from Addu as part of port developmental initiatives. As part of the first phase, small vessels are being given bunkering facilities from the port's quay wall.
