The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has called for safeguarding the interests of polling stations.
Speaking to PSM News regarding the parliamentary election, HRCM Member Aminath Shifaath Abdul Razzaq highlighted the need to oversee polling stations and uphold the right to vote. Stressing the importance of maintaining confidentiality in the voting process, she urged all parties to ensure secrecy while exercising their voting rights. She also cautioned against vote-buying, highlighting its legal consequences.
Additionally, Shifaath revealed plans to monitor a total of 263 polling stations during the election, including those in Male' City and various islands. She further urged respect for individuals with disabilities, the elderly, and pregnant women at polling stations, advocating for their prompt accommodation in queues and swift voting processes.
Furthermore, Shifaath appealed to candidates, their representatives, and political parties to refrain from engaging in anti-campaigning against opponents. She also implored citizens to uphold the rights of others and prioritise peace in all circumstances.
