Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has announced the official results of the parliamentary elections held on April 21. While the official results were publicised, it is indifferent from the preliminary results announced. As such, the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) secured the super majority with 66 seats.
The party which secured the second-highest number of seats is the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), achieving 12 seats. Despite securing 12 seats, the majority of MDP candidates and parliamentarians suffered an unprecedented defeat. This includes the current Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Aslam and the Vice Speaker Ahmed Saleem.
Among the candidates who participated in the elections individually, 11 accomplished in securing seats. However, seven out of the 11 candidates have now signed to be members of PNC, hence raising the number of PNC parliamentarians to 73.
Additionally, candidates of the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and Jumhooree Party (JP) secured one seat each, while Adhaalath Party and The Democrats failed to secure a seat from the parliament.
Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Aslam has officially announced that the oath taking ceremony for the newly elected parliamentarians will be held on May 28. The current Parliament's tenure will conclude on May 15 under the Parliamentary Privileges and Powers Act, with its last meeting scheduled to be held on May 13.
