Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal has revealed President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's commitment to designate Fonadhoo and Gan, islands of Laamu Atoll, to the status of a city. The remarks were made by the minster during the jubilant event held in Fonadhoo to celebrate PNC's victory in securing the seat of the constituency in the parliamentary elections.
Speaking at the event, Minister Faisal affirmed that all the required development and facilities necessary to provide services in cities, will be established on the island in a timely manner. As such, hospitals, housing units, road development projects and efforts to establish sports facilities will be initiated by the government.
Furthermore, Minister Faisal disclosed that plans have been formulated by the government, aiming to expand the tourism industry within Fonadhoo. The minister highlighted that ongoing efforts and discussions are being held seeking international investors to assist in developing the tourism sector of the island. Unveiling that efforts are underway to establish four resorts in Laamu Atoll under the One Island Concept, he also noted that decisions have been such that one island of the atoll will be given as rent to a Dubai investor, aiming to enhance the tourism industry.
On this stance, the Minister recognised the efforts initiated by the government to advance the Kadhdhoo Airport to an international airport as well.
