Gov't assures medical students of uninterrupted studies

The government has reassured students that the temporary relocation of the medical school from Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) to Maldives National University's (MNU) main campus will not have any negative impact.

Initially, MNU had established its medical school at Dharumavantha Hospital in 2018 on a temporary basis. However, with the temporary relocation, concerns were raised by students about the change. To address these concerns, officials from the President's Office held a meeting to discuss the issues raised by medical students. The MNU Student Union (MNUSU) confirmed that they effectively communicated these concerns to the administration during the meeting.

In a statement released, MNUSU highlighted that they have received assurances from the government regarding the continuation of medical students' studies without any disruption. The government also revealed plans to upgrade the campus to surpass the current standards at Dharumavantha Hospital. Additionally, the statement emphasized the President's Office's commitment to significant advancements in the health sector, aligning with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's key promises.

Regarding the temporary relocation, MNU stated that students will now permanently receive instructions at the developing campus located in Hulhumale', which is being funded through Pakistan's free aid. Alongside the medical school, efforts are underway to establish a teaching hospital as part of MNU.

Furthermore, MNU unveiled plans for the establishment of a medical school capable of accommodating 100 students and equipped with the latest resources. Simultaneously, the teaching hospital is set to be developed with a 300-bed facility, providing healthcare services with modern technology.

Currently, there are over 200 students studying at MNU, and the government aims to ensure that their educational needs are met effectively during this transitional period.
