Practical work to begin on new Addu power plant in four months

Fenaka Corporation Limited has revealed that construction of a new power plant in Addu City will commence within the next four months. The contract for setting up a 32MW power plant in Addu was awarded to Dongfang Electric International Corporation, a Chinese company, in April.

Speaking to PSM News, Deputy Managing Director of Fenaka Hussain Zuhury highlighted the challenging electricity situation in Addu, even since the current government took office. He noted frequent power cuts across various parts of Addu over the past three months, with the existing power plant relying on at least 15 generators to cope.

Additionally, Zuhury revealed that the groundwork for the new power plant site is underway, with plans to hand it over to the contractor soon. He also said that the construction will commence once the necessary funds are available, promising a significant alleviation of the electricity woes of Addu.

The existing power plant in Addu, established 24 years ago, currently operates at 12MW during peak loads. The new power plant will be erected adjacent to the current one, aiming to provide uninterrupted electricity for the next 20 to 25 years.

The project will be executed in phases, with the initial phase involving the installation of two 9.8MW generator sets to serve for the next 15 years. Subsequently, two 5.8MW generator sets will be added, with provisions for a capacity upgrade of up to 50MW. The entire project is slated for completion within six years.
