The government has initiated an operation to address the issue of flooding during the rainy season, aiming to provide a temporary solution until roads are upgraded to modern standards.
The collaboration involves the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure, and Road Development Corporation (RDC), focusing initially on the West Park area, which experiences significant flooding during the rainy season.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the project, Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib emphasised the temporary nature of this initiative, highlighting its importance in mitigating potential emergency situations. The project involves installing necessary drainage facilities in the West Park area, with plans to address flooding in other areas as well.
Moreover, efforts are currently underway to bring in drainage pumps to alleviate water accumulation in Male’ City, and upgrades to existing pumps on Ameenee road are also being pursued.
Furthermore,Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar stressed the administration's commitment to reducing damage caused by rainfall amid rapid global climate change. This initiative aligns with President Muizzu’s vision for national welfare.
Minister of Defense Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon also reiterated the government's priority to reconstruct roads while minimizing rain-related damage for residents.
Financial aid and temporary relocation facilities are provided to affected residents, with plans to develop roads to modern standards and upgrade Boduthakurufaanu road with Chinese assistance. Tarring roads in Male’ City are also slated for practical initiation by the year's end.
