Maldives urges UNSC to recognise Palestine as full UN member

The Maldives has urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to recognise Palestine as a full member of the UN. This appeal followed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution titled "Admission of New Member States to the United Nations," passed during the 10th emergency session of the UNGA on May 10.

In a statement, he Maldives emphasised that the support for the UNGA resolution sends a strong message to the UNSC. The Maldives also called on the UN to take immediate steps to alleviate the suffering and injustice faced by Palestinian citizens and to hold Israel accountable for its actions. In a addition, the Maldives reiterated that the only lasting solution to the Middle East conflict is the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The emergency session was reconvened on May 10 at the request of the Arab Group, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Non-Aligned Movement. The resolution, co-sponsored by the Maldives, was approved by 143 countries. The UNSC has since issued a statement on the matter. Nine UN member states voted against the resolution granting Palestine full membership, while twenty-five countries abstained from voting.
