Gov't sets taxi fares for large vehicles

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced the establishment of special fares for larger vehicles capable of accommodating more than seven passengers simultaneously.

The transport ministry has introduced fixed pricing for vans and vehicles with seating capacities ranging from 7-10 individuals, in response to ongoing challenges. Effective May 20, passengers are urged to adhere to the revised rates.

For vehicles with fewer than six seats, a fee of USD0.64, in addition to the airport fare, will be applied. Meanwhile, vehicles with 7 to 10 seats will incur an extra charge of USD0.97. Moreover, a fee of USD0.32 will be levied for each piece of luggage exceeding three for taxis. In addition, pricing structure for vehicles accommodating 7-10 passengers and those with fewer than six seats will remain consistent with rates established in 2022.

The ministry has emphasised fairness for both taxi drivers and passengers. It has determined taxi fares based on factors such as distance, fuel expenses, and other pertinent considerations. To ensure compliance, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) will oversee taxi operations closely, while the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) will display fare information prominently at airport terminals.
