Current rainfall expected to subside on May 26

The Maldives Meteorological Service has announced that the current rainfall is expected to subside on May 26.

Speaking to PSM News, Meteorologist at Maldives Meteorological Service Abdulla Hafiz stated that rains are expected to continue through the weekend, with the wind expected to diminish by Sunday. Hafiz noted that the current weather conditions are characterised by more wind than rain.

The cyclone affecting the region is anticipated to intensify into a storm by Friday night. However, the cyclone is currently moving away from the Maldives and is projected to reach the coasts of Myanmar and Bangladesh. If the cyclone maintains its strength, windy conditions in the Maldives are likely to persist but are expected to slow down by Sunday, according to Hafiz.

The Maldives Meteorological Service has advised seafarers to exercise caution due to the severe weather conditions. Currently, winds are averaging 25 mph, and the seas are expected to be rough. Additionally, floods are anticipated in some areas.

A yellow alert for heavy rains and strong winds has been issued for the Maldives, specifically from Haa Alifu Atoll to Laamu Atoll, effective from 19:15 hours.
