Maldives urges Israel to comply with ICJ ruling to stop Gaza attacks

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called for Israel to comply with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling to cease its attacks on Gaza immediately. He expressed his support for the ICJ decision in a social media post.

In his post, President Dr. Muizzu emphasised that Israel must adhere to the ICJ order to halt the inhumane actions in Rafah, insisting on the opening of the Rafah border and the provision of humanitarian aid. Additionally, President Muizzu described the ICJ ruling as a significant step toward peace but underscored that the Maldives believes Palestine should be recognised as an independent and sovereign state. He said that lasting stability requires East Jerusalem to remain the capital of Palestine, as defined by the pre-1967 borders.

South Africa submitted a complaint with the ICJ, accusing Israel of conducting inhumane attacks aimed at exterminating Palestinian citizens. They argued that the aggression endangers the lives and future of Palestinians. Last week, South Africa filed another case with the ICJ seeking an order to stop the offensive in Rafah. The ICJ's 15-judge bench ruled in favour of the order, commanding Israeli forces to end their inhumane occupation in Rafah and withdraw from Gaza. The decision was supported by 13 of the 15 judges, with two refusing.
