Minister announces exploration of cooking salt production in Maldives

Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has announced that the potential for cooking salt production in the Maldives is being explored. He made the statement during a press conference on the economic ministry's activities.

Speaking at the press conference, Minister Saeed emphasised the government's priority on maximizing the use of the natural resources in the Maldives. As such, he said that the Business Centre Corporation (BCC), a government company, has been tasked with investigating the feasibility of producing cooking salt locally.

Additionally, Minister Saeed mentioned ongoing discussions with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to secure funding for this research. He highlighted that the Maldives currently imports various grades of salt, and the government’s goal is to achieve self-sufficiency in salt production within the next five years.
