The Maldives has long been a staunch advocate for the rights of Palestinians, consistently supporting their cause on the international stage. The nation has been vocal about its support for an independent Palestinian state for many years. Since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu took office, these efforts have intensified, with the Maldives representing Palestine in various international forums.
Under President Muizzu's leadership, the Maldives has raised its voice in favor of Palestine at environmental, economic, and health meetings worldwide. This commitment has been recognised by the Ambassador of Palestine to Maldives, Walid Abu Ali to the Maldives, who has praised the significant efforts of the Maldivian government. The Ambassador expressed pride in the work of President Muizzu and his administration in advocating for Palestinian rights.
Despite these efforts, some critics and opposition members have misrepresented the government's stance. The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has introduced resolutions and bills in parliament, claiming to support the Palestinian cause. However, questions have arisen regarding their previous inaction when they held a supermajority in parliament. Some believe the opposition's current actions are politically motivated.
The government maintains that President Muizzu has done more for the Palestinian cause than any previous administration. In addition to vocal advocacy, the President has strengthened bilateral relations and provided various forms of assistance to Palestine.
Further demonstrating this commitment, Public Service Media (PSM) has organised a special telethon to support the Palestinian people upon the instructions of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Scheduled for June 12, the telethon aims to raise funds and awareness for those in need in Palestine, highlighting the growing relationship between the Maldives and Palestine.
The Maldivian government remains steadfast in its dedication to supporting Palestine, ready to take whatever steps necessary to advocate for their rights and well-being.
