Gov't announces significant changes brought to HPSN

Ministry of Social and Family Development has announced that significant operational changes at the Home for People with Special Needs (HPSN) in Guraidhoo, Kaafu atoll, stating that it is now capable of ensuring that individuals under rehabilitation return to their respective families after treatment.

Speaking at a press conference held to shed light on the endeavours of the ministry within the past six months, Deputy Minister Aminath Ismail revealed that efforts are underway to complete the major changes brought to the centre. Highlighting that a total of 221 people are currently undergoing treatment at the centre, the minister affirmed the collection of medical reviews of each individual. She disclosed that caseworkers were assigned to each person.

Revealing that there are several individuals in HPSN for prolonged periods, Deputy Minister Aminath emphasised the ongoing efforts to rehabilitate patients post-treatment. Highlighting that these endeavours have facilitated the reunion of 15 individuals with their families, the minister revealed that preparations are underway to reunite an additional 24 individuals with their families as well. Additionally, she underscored the ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of services such that it meets the essential needs of individuals seeking treatment in HPSN.

Providing information on the changes brought to the HPSN which was established in 1976, Deputy Minister Aminath unveiled that two wards specialised to accommodate men and children have been prepared for inauguration. A reintegration ward was opened on May 27, aiming to teach people about household life before reuniting with their respective families following the completion of their health and mental treatment and the social skills programmes. The newly opened ward is designated for women who are receiving treatment for mental health issues and are ready to reintegrate into society.

Furthermore, Deputy Minister Aminath affirmed arrangements to ensure the provision of necessary treatment from the health centre of the island. This initiative aims to address the requests of several individuals to transfer special need patients to HPSN. The minister revealed that this initiative has eased the backlog significantly.
