The report on the representation of members in the Standing Committee of the Parliament has been approved in the parliamentary meeting, with a total of 88 votes.
Including the Committee on National Security Services, there are a total of 18 Standing Committees of the Parliament. The report outlines on the representation of political parties and parliamentarians who are not in any political parties. Decisions have been made such that all parliamentarians except for the Speaker of the Parliament will sit as a member of one of the committees.
The Parliament comprises of 75 members from the ruling party, People's National Congress (PNC), 12 members from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), two members from the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), a member of Jumhooree Party (JP), a member of Maldives National Party (MNP) and two members who are not representing any parties. The slots for the committees are based on the number of members represented by the parties in the parliament.
The approved reports indicated that PNC secured 151 slots in the Standing Committees, while MDP secured 24 slots. Meanwhile, MDA secured four slots, while JP and MNP secured two slots each. Additionally, members who do not represent any parties secured four slots. All committees will consist of 11 members, other than the Committee on National Security Services. The Committee on National Security Services will consist of 13 members in total.
