Gov't prioritises protecting interests of individuals in the workforce

Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development Dr. Maryam Mariya has affirmed the government's commitment to protecting the rights and interest of all individuals active in the labour market. The remarks were made by the minister during the 112th International Labour Conference.

Speaking at the conference held in Geneva, Switzerland, Minister Dr. Mariya stated that the Maldives was a member of the International Labour Organization (ILO) since 2009, highlighting the efforts of the government, especially focusing on protecting the rights and dignity of workers in the workplace. The minister stressed that major constitutional and institutional reforms were made in recent years, aiming to protect the rights of workers while promoting labour in all islands across the nation.

Furthermore, Minister Dr. Mariya underscored the ongoing initiatives undertaken by the government in collaboration with employers and workers to protect the interests of all individuals in the labour market. The minister expressed gratitude to the ILO for its unwavering dedication and commitment to protect the rights and dignity of workers while upholding social justice. She further extended her appreciation to the organization for their contribution to build an equitable society.

The conference attended by various countries pertains to discuss the various policies of ILO and to discuss and address questions related to the society and work environment.
