The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has reported an increase in the occupancy rates of tourism facilities during the first four months of this year.
According to the MMA's monthly statistics report, the overall occupancy rate has risen by 3.2% compared to the same period last year, reaching 72.7% from 69.5%.
Tourists visiting the Maldives typically stay in resorts, guesthouses, hotels, and safaris. The report highlights that, except for hotels, occupancy rates have increased across all other types of accommodations. Resorts saw an occupancy rate of 82.2%, up from 80.8% last year. Guesthouses recorded a significant increase to 56.6% from 48.2%, and safaris had an occupancy rate of 38.3%, compared to 33.9% last year. However, hotel occupancy rates declined to 30.5% from 39.7%.
The increase in occupancy rates has also led to a rise in bed nights. According to the Ministry of Tourism, as of June 4, 907,066 tourists have visited the Maldives, marking a 9.9% increase compared to the same period last year.
Remarkably, China has been the largest source of tourists, with 102,706 Chinese visitors recorded so far this year.
