President declares June 20 a public holiday

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that June 20, 2024, will be observed as a Government holiday. The announcement was made in a directive issued by the President's Office.

This decision follows an adjustment to the Islamic calendar by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, which declared the start of Dhul Hijjah on June 7, 2024, based on the sighting of the crescent moon for Dhul Hijjah 1445.

Consequently, Arafat Day will be observed on June 15, 2024, and Eid al-Adha on Sunday, June 16, 2024. The Government had previously designated June 17, 18, and 19 as holidays to celebrate Eid al-Adha.

The addition of June 20 as a holiday is intended to alleviate any potential inconvenience the public may experience while returning from their holidays.

Following the President’s announcement, Government offices will reopen on June 23, 2024.
