Parliament approves the appointment of 3 cabinet ministers

The Parliament has officially approved the nominations of three ministers from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet who had previously not received approval.

The positions confirmed include Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed; Minister of Housing, Land, and Urban Development, Dr. Ali Haidar; and Attorney General (AG) Ahmed Usham. In the recent parliamentary vote, Dr. Shaheem received approval from 83 members, Dr. Haidar from 81 members, and AG Usham from 87 members.

President Muizzu had initially sought approval for these ministers on February 4, following an issue where only 19 out of his 22 cabinet ministers were approved in January by a parliament previously dominated by the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP). Despite the president reappointing these ministers and resubmitting their names, the approval process was delayed under the former Speaker of Parliament, Ahmed Aslam, due to a resolution proposed by then parliamentarian Eva Abdulla.

With the commencement of the new parliamentary session, the matter was referred to the Government Oversight Committee, which subsequently recommended the ministers for approval. Committee Chairperson Mohamed Ismail noted that the ministers demonstrated proficiency in their respective fields, leading to the successful confirmation of their appointments.
