MPS attributes crime rise in Male' to released convicts

Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shifan has highlighted the increase in crime within Male' City, attributing it to the release of a significant number of criminals.

Expressing his concerns on social media, Shifan underscored the increase in criminal activities is an undeniable reality. He pointed out that the release of 434 offenders a decade ago lacked a framework for their rehabilitation, exacerbating the situation. Moreover, he emphasized the inadequacy of strategic initiatives to enhance police infrastructure, hindering effective resolution of this issue. His remarks come amidst a rise in reports of theft cases across the Greater Male' Region.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) noted the trend in the rise in reports during their recent press briefing. Notably, MPS successfully seized a network involved in the theft and trafficking of vehicles, following the recent incident involving the car of Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), stolen from Velana International Airport (VIA). In addition, MPS seized several individuals involved in cases of kidnapping and robbery within Hulhumale' Phase II.
