The Parliamentary Group (PG) of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has expressed its support for the government's policy to reduce the number of Parliamentarians. The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Parliament.
The government's legislative agenda includes amendments aimed at reducing the number of parliamentarians. The agenda encompasses 213 bills across 15 topics.
Speaking at the press conference, MDP PG Group Spokesperson and Parliamentarian Mauroof Zakir highlighted the extensive list of bills and amendments proposed by the government. He also said that the the party's PG group is currently researching the rationale behind such amendments and new laws.
Additionally, Mauroof expressed his personal support for the government's legislative agenda, particularly the amendment to the Constitution of the Maldives concerning the number of Parliamentarians. He, however, noted that the PG group has yet to make an official decision on whether to support this policy.
The Constitution states that there must be one member for every 5,000 registered individuals in each administrative constituency, or for constituencies with fewer than 5,000 individuals. If the population exceeds 5,000, an additional member is added for every 5,000 individuals. As the population grows, so does the number of Parliamentarians.
The 19th Parliament had 87 members, but the current 20th Parliament has 93 members.
