Parliament Speaker calls for higher priority for the shipping industry

Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdullah has called for the shipping industry to be given higher priority. Speaking at the World Seafarer Day celebration, the Speaker highlighted that the shipping industry is a significant source of foreign currency for the country.

Abdul Raheem, who has a background in shipping before entering politics, emphasized that national development relies on more than just a single industry, such as tourism or fishing. He identified the shipping industry as one of the primary contributors to the country's foreign exchange earnings.

He also pointed out a recent administrative success, noting that the current government has resolved the longstanding Seafarer Identity Card issue, which previous administrations had struggled with for seven years, within its first seven months in office. This achievement, he said, demonstrates that sincere efforts by the government can effectively tackle persistent problems.

Furthermore, Abdul Raheem urged stakeholders in the shipping industry and the government to collaborate closely to address ongoing challenges within the sector.

During the ceremony, the Speaker of Parliament was honored with a plaque in recognition of his contributions to the shipping industry.
