Gov't to enhance employment opportunities for people with disabilities

The Ministry of Social and Family Development has announced efforts undertaken to create a favorable work environment for individuals with special needs while ensuring equal opportunities in the workplace.

One of the key measures initiated by the government to achieve this goal is the formulation of a regulation designed to facilitate employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Publicised this year, the regulation aims to ensure that individuals with special needs receive equal employment and job opportunities. It sets out the rules to guarantee that individuals with disabilities enjoy their right to work.

In March 2023, the ministry signed agreements with three resorts managed by Hilton to provide vocational training for people with disabilities. Under this agreement, individuals with disabilities will have the chance to learn various skills currently needed in the tourism industry. The ministry aims to transform the nation's tourism sector into an inclusive industry by increasing opportunities for individuals with special needs.

Additionally, the ministry entered into an agreement with Maldives Airport Company Limited (MACL) to conduct an internship programme. This initiative is expected to enable individuals with disabilities to gain more job opportunities in the employment market. The government stated that participants will receive practical work experience and develop relevant skills through the programme. MACL has committed to providing the best job experience for all individuals participating in the internship.

Furthermore, the ministry collaborated with Care Society Maldives to offer a two-month training programme for candidates registered for employment opportunities. This programme aims to familiarise individuals with the work environment and enhance the necessary skills for their jobs.

Highlighting ongoing efforts, the ministry is in the process of signing agreements with Road Development Corporation Limited (RDC) and affirmed its dedication to collaborating with other institutions to create more employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. The government reiterated its steadfast commitment to enhancing the quality of life for individuals with special needs.
