Gov't plans to enhance fire and rescue capabilities at VIA

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has announced the government will develop Velana International Airport (VIA). He made this statement during the inaugural ceremony of the new fire station at VIA.

At the event, Vice President emphasised that VIA will be developed with enhanced fire and rescue capabilities, advanced technology, and reliable facilities, in line with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s development plan for the airport. Highlighting the significance of the tourism sector as a cornerstone of the Maldives' economy, the Vice President underscored the crucial role of the airport's fire and rescue service in ensuring the safety and security of civil aviation. He noted that the increase in foreign flights to the Maldives and the confidence in the airport's security underscores the importance of these efforts. He further commended the dedication of the workers and encouraged them to persevere in their endeavors.

CEO and Managing Director of the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Ibrahim Mohamed Shareef also spoke at the event. He stressed the firm’s determination to expedite VIA's development and make it a regionally acclaimed airport. Shareef noted that the new fire station is critical to safeguarding airport operations, making it easier to respond to fires and disasters at the airport and in neighboring cities and islands.

During the event, Vice President observed a special fire drill demonstrating the services and facilities of the newly opened fire station. The drill showcased the fire brigades in three main scenarios and included a demonstration of handling a medical emergency.

The Vice President also inspected the facilities and equipment at the newly opened fire station at VIA, reaffirming the government's commitment to enhancing the airport's infrastructure and safety measures.
