Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shifan has affirmed the Maldives Police Service (MPS) will protect the basic rights of individuals held in custody. The remarks were made by the assistant commissioner in a post shared on social media.
In response to an article publicised which stated an individual in detention was unable to attend the need of her child due to the police officers, Assistant Commissioner Shifan revealed that the information given by the article were false. He assured all individuals under custody were never deprived of their rights as per regulations.
Furthermore, Shifan disclosed the individual mentioned in the article was given the opportunity to attend the needs of her child.
