Homeland Security announces post-mortem procedures for inmate deaths

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has announced that prisoners who die in jail will be handed over to their respective families after a post-mortem examination. This decision aims to prevent doubts and rumors surrounding prison deaths.

Addressing the media, Minister Ihusaan referred to the recent death of a prisoner on June 28, stating that the body of any prisoner who dies in jail will undergo a full post-mortem before being released to their families. The post-mortem reports will be completed, and relevant authorities will be held accountable, he added.

Minister Ihusaan also noted that local prisons do not meet international standards, particularly lacking adequate facilities for inmates receiving mental health treatment. He emphasised the need for improvements and assured that all policies would be strictly adhered to, with prisoners being closely monitored at all times. Additionally, Maldives Correctional Services has installed security cameras in various parts of the prison to enhance safety and security.

The prisoner who passed away during his jail sentence was Mohamed Jameel Didi from Funadhoo in Shaviyani Atoll. He had been imprisoned since July 12, 2023.
