Public Service Media (PSM) has handed over the funds raised during the "Falastheenaa eku Dhivehin" telethon to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The symbolic cheque, amounting to MVR 19,186,851.5, was presented by PSM's Managing Director, Zeena Zahir, to Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer in a ceremony held.
The telethon, held on June 12, 2024 to support the Palestinian people, was initiated by PSM and overseen by the independent audit firm Crowe Maldives, which confirmed the transparency of the event. The total funds raised include MVR 18,418,922.24, USD 49,800.86.
Managing Director Zeena Zahir expressed gratitude to all contributors, including media, government, and state agencies. She highlighted the extensive effort required to count the donations, especially the MVR 40,000 received in coins. Zeena also thanked the Maldives Police Service (PSM) for ensuring the event's safety and noted the significant involvement of PSM employees.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided that the telethon proceeds would be distributed to the Palestinian people through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA).
Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer acknowledged efforts of Maldivians to support Palestine's independence and emphasised the importance of having an independent auditor to ensure the secure transfer of funds to UNRWA.
United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees was established under a UN General Assembly resolution.
