President congratulates Iran's new president

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has extended congratulations to Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, the newly elected President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, following his victory in the country’s elections.

In a post shared on a social media platform, President Muizzu expressed his hope of working together to strengthen the relationship between the Maldives and Iran.

President Dr. Muizzu also conveyed best wishes for the success of President-elect Pezeshkian in fostering peace and prosperity in Iran and the wider region.

Masoud Pezeshkian, the sole moderate in the original field of four candidates, won run-off presidential vote against former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili. He will replace hardline President Ebrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash in May.

Pezeshkian, a 69-year-old cardiac surgeon, has pledged to promote a pragmatic foreign policy, ease tensions over now-stalled negotiations with major powers to revive a 2015 nuclear pact and improve prospects for social liberalisation and political pluralism.
