Writers plays the most important role in the development of Dhivehi language: President

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised that writers play the most important role in the development of the Dhivehi language. He made these remarks via a social media post in celebration of National Writers' Day.

National Writers' Day is celebrated annually on July 8. This year’s theme is "The Role of Writers is Important for Sustaining a Civilised Society."

July 8 is marked as the National Writers' Day in the Maldives because it commemorates the publication of the first printed magazine in the country. The inaugural issue of "Al-Islah" was published on July 8, 1993. This milestone followed the introduction of the first Constitution of the Maldives on December 22, 1932, which granted some press freedom.
