WAMCO to provide waste disposal services to resorts

Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has announced that the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) will be initiating a pilot project to provide waste disposal services to resorts. Speaking at a press conference held by the ministry, Minister Thoriq revealed that the pilot project will commence this month and will target three atolls: Raa Atoll, Baa Atoll, and Lhaviyani Atoll.

Minister Thoriq highlighted the ongoing issue of improper waste management at some resorts, where waste is either dumped into the ocean or not taken to designated waste transfer stations. He acknowledged that these practices have been a concern for island councils, who have raised complaints about the environmental impact of such actions.

In response to these issues, the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy has collaborated with WAMCO and resort operators to develop a solution. The pilot project aims to establish responsible waste management practices at the selected resorts, with the potential for expansion based on the project's outcomes.

The minister emphasized that if the pilot project demonstrates effective waste disposal practices, the ministry will take appropriate actions against resorts that persistently violate waste management regulations.

Minister Thoriq stressed that the initiative reflects the government's commitment to environmental sustainability and effective waste management practices. He also noted that once the pilot project is successfully implemented, there will be opportunities to expand the service to more resorts across the country.
