Gov't warns of scams extorting money from scholarship, loan students

The Ministry of Higher Education, Labour, and Skills Development has announced that students receiving loan scholarships will not need to pay any fees or money to the government. This statement follows reports of fraudulent extortion targeting students who have applied for government scholarships and loans.

The Ministry revealed that scammers are contacting students, claiming to represent the Ministry and demanding money for services such as arranging visas, purchasing tickets, and expediting processes. These scammers falsely promise faster services in exchange for payments.

The Ministry emphasized that students are not required to pay any money to the Ministry or any associated agency for being selected for a government scholarship or loan. There are no fees or charges for expediting services.

Communication with students will continue through the official online portal and email. In cases where phone calls are necessary, they will be conducted under strict regulations. Students and their families are advised to verify the authenticity of any phone calls claiming to be from the Ministry before sharing personal information. No financial transactions should be made based on such calls.

The Ministry reiterated that all services provided by the Ministry are free of charge for students.
