Reclaimed areas were neglected since 2010: Infrastructure Minister

Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib has stated that the previous governments has not provided essential services to the reclaimed areas since 2010. He made the remarks while responding to questions from parliamentarians.

Speaking at the Parliament, Minister Muththalib noted that only two locations, Hulhumale' Phase II and Dhidhdhoo in Haa Alifu Atoll, have received basic services since 2010. He emphasised that no other areas have been provided with these essential services.

Additionally, Minister Muththalib acknowledged that while these projects are expensive, services such as water, sewerage, electricity, and roads are crucial for the residents of the areas. He assured that the current government is committed to addressing this issue and promised that water and sewerage services would be established on all islands within the next two years.

Furthermore, Minister Muththalib pointed out that the water and sewerage projects assigned to Fenaka Corporation Limited have come to a complete halt. He revealed that over 80 such projects are in various stages of development across different islands. He, however, said some projects, particularly those assigned to Fenaka, have been stopped. Likewise, he noted that Fenaka had no prior experience with water and sewerage projects before 2020.

Moreover, Minister Muththalib said that Fenaka was awarded water and sewerage works in 16 islands and upgrading works in three additional islands. He said the contracts are now being cancelled and will be transferred to the Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) due to a lack of progress. He noted that the projects awarded to Fenaka were being carried out by subcontractors and assured that efforts are underway to transfer these projects to MWSC by the end of July. Further, he also criticised the previous government for awarding projects beyond the capacity of the involved companies.
