A total of 20 Maldivian imams have departed for Brunei to receive training in Islamic studies abroad.
Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed had announced the opportunity for Maldivian imams to train in Brunei on July 1. The training will take place at the Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, Brunei's first national Islamic university.
Minister Shaheem met with the imams before their departure for the training programme. This marks the third time the imams have travelled abroad this year. The Minister noted that 60 imams have been sent abroad so far this year, with plans for additional training trips to Indonesia, Malaysia, and Kuwait.
The national project to train imams and khateebs, both within the Maldives and abroad, was launched in February this year. The project includes training trips to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia. To date, 20 imams and khateebs travelled to Saudi Arabia in February, with another 18 following in May.
