Committee approves to submit financial statements within 90 days of swearing-in

The General Purpose Committee of the Parliament has approved the inclusion of a requirement to submit financial statements within 90 days from the date of oath taking. The committee is in the process of drafting the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament. The work was also approved to be completed by the end of the month.

Parliamentary Counsel General Fathimath Filza submitted advice on the submission of financial statements of members to the committee meeting. The proposal is to change the provision that a parliamentarian shall submit a statement of assets and liabilities after completion of one year from the date of taking the oath of office. The Counsel General recommended that the rules of the Parliament be amended to require financial statements to be submitted within 90 days from the date of swearing-in.

Parliamentarian Ibrahim Didi moved the motion to include the proposal in the rules of the Parliament. The motion was supported by Parliamentarian Ameen Faisal and was approved by a majority of the committee members.

The statements of members, spouses, and children under the age of 18 must be published on the website of the Parliament, according to the rules of the previous Parliament cycle. The details of assets and liabilities to be submitted when submitting financial statements are prescribed in the Constitution. The rules of the previous Parliament shall apply until the rules of the new Parliament are formulated.
