The airport developmental project in Magoodhoo, Faafu Atoll, has resumed. The project was contracted to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), under a design and build policy, on October 19, 2022.
The project launched by the previous administration marks the development of the first airport in Faafu Atoll. The airport is set to be developed after reclaiming 30 hectares of land. Additionally, the project also includes reclamation work of 48 hectares of land for industrial and societal purposes, while protecting and monitoring 3,300 acres of land.
Speaking to PSM News, President of Magoodhoo Island Council Abdullah Waheed stated that the airport developmental project of Magoodhoo Airport has been resumed with work to tar the runway ongoing. Waheed added that shipments of stones and other filler materials have been brought. He further mentioned that efforts are underway to establish a fire station and a new terminal in the airport. He expressed confidence that with the current speed and progress of the works, the development of the airport can be completed and brought to operations during this year.
Some senior individuals of the opposition party have criticised the current administration, claiming the project was stalled following the announcements and preparations made by the government to establish an airport in Nilandhoo, Faafu Atoll. Residents of Magoodhoo have raised their concerns over the issue. In response, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to ensure the completion of the development of Magoodhoo Airport, during his official visit to some islands in Faafu Atoll.
Initially, decisions were made to develop a runway of 1,200 metres in Magoodhoo Airport. However, it has now been decided to develop a runway of 1,800 metres. The airport developmental project is valued at USD14.98 million. The management of Magoodhoo Airport has been designated to Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL).
