President announces allocation of funds to support local artists

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that USD1.6 million will be allocated from the budget of the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information, and Arts, to support local artists, subject to specific guidelines. The announcement was made by the president while speaking at the Unveiling Visions 2024, the Maldives contemporary art exhibition.

Speaking at the event held at the National Art Gallery, President Dr. Muizzu emphasised the government's commitment to fully support the promotion of talents and work of local artists, as outlined in the manifesto. The president further noted the government's initiatives to create opportunities for local artists to showcase and market their work. In his address, he highlighted that the government’s manifesto includes the creation of a creator economy, adding that he would enable artists, IT sector and handicraft to sell their products on the international platform.

Additionally, President Dr. Muizzu assured that the government will support local artists financially to help them develop their talent. Noting the space constraints encountered to hold exhibitions, the president also mentioned that a dedicated space would be established in Hulhumale' to showcase the talents of artists. He stated that the government would facilitate exhibitions across various islands and encourage artists to present their talents at international forums.

The Maldivian Artist Community (MAC) shortlisted 105 artists from over 200 applications for Unveiling Visions 2024, including drawing, painting, mixed media, calligraphy, and installation categories. The exhibition, which took place at the National Art Gallery from July 9 to 21, featured both renowned artists and new talents from the Maldives. The Unveiling Vision has showcased the talents of the nation’s artists for seven consecutive years.

The MAC presented President Dr. Muizzu with a special catalogue, consisting of information on the artworks which were displayed. At the event, he autographed the book Unveiling Visions 2024 that visitors had signed.
