Chairperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Fayyaz Ismail has expressed optimism despite the party's recent performance in the local council by-elections.
The opposition MDP did not secure a single win out of the six by-elections held on July 20. The main ruling People's National Congress (PNC) won five of the six by-elections, while an independent candidate claimed the sixth. In addition, PNC candidates were uncontested in three more by-elections.
In a social media post, Fayyaz noted the significant defeats MDP has faced in recent elections but commended the party candidates for their courage. He emphasised that there is no reason for disappointment and assured that the party will experience successful days ahead as they work to strengthen its management.
MDP has faced major defeats in the recent presidential, parliamentary, and local council by-elections. He pointed out that after the presidential election, the party's only victory was in the Male' City mayoral by-election.
MDP is developing a roadmap to strengthen the party and is currently seeking input from its members. The party leadership has visited the two southern atolls to gather feedback.
