Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu has underscored the pivotal role of integrity and honesty in the advancement of sports. The remarks were made by the minister after inaugurating the campaign, Promoting Anti-Corruption, Honesty and Accountability in Sports (PACHAS).
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Rafiu stressed the need for associations and organisations to cease all corrupt practices to foster the development of sports. The minister highlighted the critical need to prioritise integrity and honesty, both during competitions and in providing opportunities for athletes.
Meanwhile, President of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Adam Shamil stated that several acts of corruption have been observed in sports previously. Shamil highlighted that sports plays a significant role of sports in strengthening societal bonds, promoting unity, and enhancing athletes' physical and mental well-being. Therefore, he stressed the importance of upholding integrity within the sports sector.
The ACC announced plans to conduct research aimed at identifying and preventing corrupt activities within sports under the PACHAS Campaign. Additionally, the commission disclosed intentions to conduct awareness sessions aimed at eliminating all forms of corruption in sports.
